The key distinction: A well-written, beautifully designed website can score very low on ARS. Agents don't read prose, they parse structured data. A page with complete schema markup and clear entity definition will consistently outperform a polished marketing page with no machine-readable structure, even if the latter scores higher for human readers.

Why ARS is the prerequisite: An agent that cannot parse your digital presence cannot evaluate you. It will not attempt the action layer. A high AAS score is worthless without a sufficient ARS to get an agent through the discovery phase, your business simply won't appear in the evaluation set.
ARS measures how legible your business is to machine readers. Not how good your content is, how structured it is. A well-written homepage with no schema markup scores lower than a sparse page with complete entity definition. Agents parse signals, not prose.
The agent finds a page but cannot classify the organization, product, or pricing. It either skips the business entirely or misrepresents it in comparison outputs. You are invisible in evaluations you never knew were happening.

The critical insight: A "Contact Us for Pricing" button scores zero on AAS. An agent cannot initiate a conversation. It can only call an endpoint, parse structured data, or complete a machine-readable form. If your commercial infrastructure requires a human to be involved at any point, an agent cannot transact with you, and will move on to a competitor who has built for agent interaction.
AAS measures whether the action layer of your business is machine-operable. Not whether you have a sales team, whether an autonomous agent can complete a commercial evaluation and initiate a transaction without any human in the loop.
Pricing is hidden behind sales calls. Trial flows require human completion. No API documentation agents can discover. The business is present in the evaluation but cannot be acted upon, so agents route to alternatives.

AVS is the composite verdict, a single number predicting commercial performance in an agent-mediated world. The weighting is deliberate: action earns more than discovery because an agent that can find you but cannot transact with you generates zero revenue.
Being parseable and trustworthy is table stakes. Without a sufficient ARS, an agent excludes you before it reaches the action layer. But discoverability alone does not generate commercial outcomes.
Commercial operability, the ability for an agent to actually use, purchase, or integrate your product, is where revenue lives. The majority of the composite score reflects this reality.
